Pistons sign veteran guard Jaylen Nowell
Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Pistons signed veteran guard Jaylen Nowell to a 10-day contract, the team announced on Wednesday.

Nowell was averaging 17.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 27.9 minutes in 28 games for the Stockton Kings of the NBA's G League.

He was signed earlier this season to a pair of 10-day contracts with the Memphis Grizzlies and averaged 5.7 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 17.3 minutes in nine games (one start).

The Minnesota Timberwolves had selected him in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft out of Washington. Nowell has averaged 8.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 17.1 minutes over 193 games (four starts) for parts of five seasons for Minnesota (2019-23) and Memphis.

"I expect him to come in and try to acclimate," Detroit coach Monty Williams said after Tuesday's practice. "He's a guy that's scored in segments of his career. I watched him in Minnesota a little bit, and had to scout against him. We know he can score the ball. He's been around. I don't want to put it out there what we want from him, we just feel like guys like that, who are hungry and looking for opportunities, allow for us to have more bodies with all the guys we've lost this year. But it's also a chance for a guy to come in and help us win games."
