NBA Writer Makes Bold Comp For Alabama’s Mark Sears
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

With the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament entering the Final Four, the spotlight is on a few players who could have futures in the NBA. UConn is loaded with NBA prospects as they could have several players selected in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Purdue big man Zach Edey is the center of attention for a lot of people, as his basketball future has been discussed at great lengths. Another player who is putting himself squarely in the mix for NBA evaluators is Alabama point guard Mark Sears.

The leader of the high-paced Crimson Tide attack has been excellent in the NCAA Tournament. He has scored at least 18 points in all four games, spearheading Alabama on its deepest run in program history.

Against Clemson in the Elite Eight, Sears knocked down seven consecutive 3-pointers to help his team get an impressive 89-82 victory. For people who have been following Alabama all season, this was nothing new for them and Sears.

On the season, he is averaging 21.5 points per game to go along with 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists. Despite his diminutive stature, as he is listed at 6’1” and 185 pounds, Sears plays fearlessly on the court, getting to wherever he wants to be to find success.

His style of play is something that NBA evaluators will like, as he is also efficient offensively. This season, he has a shooting split of .504/.434/.859. That has led to him drawing some interesting comps. One writer has made a bold comp for Sears, saying that he reminds him of New York Knicks star guard, Jalen Brunson.

“Alabama’s Mark Sears is a Jalen Brunson clone. As a left-handed, 6-foot-1, 185-pound point guard, Mark Sears looks like Jalen Brunson, moves like Jalen Brunson, and plays like Jalen Brunson,” said Kevin O’Connor, via NBA Central on X.

When watching Sears play, it is easy to see why O’Connor compared him to Brunson. Both are of similar size, shoot left-handed and are bulldogs on the court. They do not let their size keep them from producing at a high level, even using it to their advantage in some situations.

Brunson ended up being selected in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft out of Villanova. Will Sears have a similar fate once he leaves school and starts the next chapter of his basketball career? Teams are certainly regretting overlooking Brunson and won’t want to do the same with Sears.
